Fair Play Playground Project

Greetings Friends;

A plan to build an inclusive play facility for children with disabilities/all abilities in our community is long overdue. The Fair Play Project is a unique community initiative seeking to address a recreational disparity for children with mobility and learning challenges. Most playground equipment in our public parks is unusable by children with sensory or physical disabilities, effectively excluding them from participation. The Fair Play project playground seeks to remedy this by providing an accessible and inclusive environment for children of all abilities and their families.  It will provide many years of smiles and health-promoting fun.

THE DREAM of an inclusive/accessible playground in Northeast Minneapolis was initiated by the local Lions Club, who chose Grace Center as the recipient/partner. Grace Center is located at 1500 6th St. NE in Minneapolis. The Lions club of NE Minneapolis has provided the first $60,000.00 as seed money to begin to grow this dream.

AN INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND is not only accessible, but encourages and enables children to engage with one another. Ramps and accessible swing seats by themselves do not lead to engagement. An inclusive playground provides opportunities and equipment for children of all abilities to play together, side by side.  A new inclusive playground at Grace Center will also adapt play equipment, promoting both physical health and children’s confidence in their abilities.

The features we would like to see in an inclusive/accessible playground include:

FairPlay Playground Drawing

  • no barriers at the entrance or along pathways
  • ramps that lead up to upper play-decks
  • monkey bars lowered so that they are reachable
  • swing seats that have backs and arms to make them usable by those who need support
  • softer surfaces
  • quiet areas
  • stimulating learning areas and sensory play equipment
  • free fun and fitness for families

We hae been busy applying for grants and welcoming donations to match the NE Lions' initial $60,000 donation for the playground.  And we are seeking lots and lots of community volunteers to help us build it!

PROPOSED TIME LINE:

  • July 2017 – Remove the current, outdated playground equipment
  • August /September 2017 - Construct the new playground August 11th, 12th, and 13th
  • September 2017 - Celebrate at the ribbon-cutting!

Be a part of this project that will change lives and take the next step in providing a play experience for everyone. A place where a kid has the freedom to be a kid, where they don’t get hurt, they can be mobile, play in a fully inclusive setting, foster friendships, and have access to where they want to go “Playgrounds should be a place where all kids are inspired to participate. I want to take my kids to a place where they blend in with everyone else and for a little while they aren’t defined by their disability but by the play of childhood.”  Jennifer Williams (Parent)

They say “it takes a village to raise a child” and we know “it will take a community to build this project”.
We hope you will consider joining us in leaving a legacy and creating a place that EVERYONE can play.
